Raj Batra runs a successful business selling bridal wears in downtown Delhi. Although rich, he is not highly educated and is not fluent in English or the supposedly 'high class culture' his wife Mita aspires to. They studied at a government run 'Hindi Medium' school, which is not known to have high degree of sophistication. Mita wants their 5 year daughter, Pia, to break this barrier and is adamant that she be admitted to one of the top five schools in Delhi. They visit all five schools and get acquainted with the admission procedure. The top school, 'Delhi Grammar School', has a condition that they will admit students who reside within 3km radius, so the family moves to Vasant Vihar. Raj is very sad to leave his paternal home.
